Malacañang of the North: Seeing History and Remnants of Power

5:42 AM

Next in our first day's itinerary in Ilocos was the Malacanang of the North or others called locally as Malacañang ti Amianan. It served as the official  residence of former president Ferdinand E. Marcos and his family. Built within a 5 hectare property that overlooks Paoay Lake, Malacañang ti Amianan boasts a design that is a mixture of Spanish and Ilocano influences.

We weren't able to get a tour guide because all of them were already booked that time so we explored the mansion on our own. We feasted our eyes on its sophisticated interiors — from grand living rooms, vast hallways and dining rooms up to Imelda's elegant walk-in closets and the family's grand bedrooms.

When the former President Marcos was removed from power, the mansion was under the care of the government for 20 years until was eventually given to the care of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte. It underwent a series of restoration and renovation before finally opening as one of the province's key museum for the public to visit.

Visiting Malacañang of the North, you will not only see history but it will also make you realize how powerful they are during the Marcos regime for every nook and cranny speaks dominance.

“Malacañang ti Amianan” is strictly open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM from Tuesdays to Sundays. It has an entrance fee of Php 20.00 collected for the maintenance of the mansion. -Lakad Pilipinas
