Hope When It Hirts 1

"Even when my strength is lost
I'll praise you
Even when I have no song
I'll praise you
Even when it's hard to find the words
Louder then I'll sing your praise
I will only sing your praise"

The memories are still vivid. It almost felt like light years away but really it was just from 2 years ago when I first heard this song. I remember I just got back from the hospital where the doctor broke out the news about my Mama's condition, I was at home thinking about how I am going to tell it to my brother (who was then at school). Then anxiety hit me. Questions about what now and what ifs rushed through me until I listened to this comforting song. I was able to tell it to my brother and we both prayed even begged the Lord to spare our Mother from such a chronic disease.

I continuously sought Him from that moment on and I was promised and reminded of three things: that I only need to be still because He is God (Psalm 46:10) and that she will recover and will be free of cancer. (Psalm 41:3)

He did fulfill His promise. Though my Mama's earthly body was not healed, I believe that by joining Our creator, her spirit has been fully restored and she is finally free of pain! But facing the reality that she is no longer with us is not easy. There's this writing by Alison Malee that totally resonates with me. It goes "I tuck away the grief, but you must understand, it still lives, breathes, consumes." So there are still days when anxiety will grab me by the hand. It will replay the last moment that I shared with her - that last dinner we've had together and the last time she held my hand until she can no longer hold back.

When people ask me if I feel sad whenever I remember my Mama, I always tell them the truth. I still feel sad, but it's not the depressing kind of sad but the hopeful one.

I was blessed by CSM Publishing with the book Hope When It Hurts: Biblical Reflections To Help You Grasp God's Purpose In Your Suffering. It goes hand in hand with my forever favorite worship song, Even When It Hurts and suffering has never been the same again.

It is not only grief that serves as a reason for our suffering. Maybe you've been oppressed, you are nursing a broken heart or experiencing a chronic illness. If you are currently experiencing any if these, you may want to read the book.

The authors Kristen and Sarah walks their readers through their own suffering and backs everything with the scriptures  that will provide us with deeper understanding as to why, we as humans, have to encounter pain

Hope When It Hirts 2

Here are some takeaways from the book that assured me to just be still and continue in praising and worshipping Him even in this hard situation.

Whenever we are struggling and we know someone who's also been on the same situation as ours, it brings comfort in knowing that we are not alone. In Hebrew 4:15, we are reminded that the Lord can symphathize with us because he himself encountered the same agony, weaknesses and temptations.

Whenever I feel the pain in me,  I no longer succumb myself with sadness but rather I try to remember that it will not be in vain and that it will be used as a testimony to bless and help others in their own afflictions. It also became a great time to seek and trust Him more.

In 2 Corinthians 4:17, the Lord is assuring us that "this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." Whatever you're facing, take heart.  The Lord tells us that this is just temporary. There will come a time when we will be free of everything that is holding us down.  No more pain, illness and heartaches.

I will only sing your praise"
